Assistive Technology
for Early Intervention
Why
should infants and young children use Assistive Technology?
This technology can improve the following skills: fine motor,
attending, expressive and receptive language, eye/hand coordination,
sensory integration, visual and auditory discrimination, object
recognition and matching, classification, self-esteem, peer
relationships, following directions, turn-taking and other cognitive
skills.
What Kinds of Assistive Technology can be used with infants and young
children?
Did you know that...
Infants as young as four months can use simple switches with toys.
Switches can also be used on the computer with cause and effect software.
There are over 40 different kinds of switches.
What skills do the children need in order to use Assistive Technology?
Children need NO SPECIAL SKILLS to use the computer. He/she need not
be able to sit up, see the screen or move their hands/arms. There
are devices which make it possible for everyone to use the computer,
regardless of their disability.
How can we get the children to use Assistive Technology?
By requesting an Assistive Technology Assessment from the TECHConnection
at FRA, your client or child will receive a written evaluation of
the appropriate devices, software and hardware he/she can use. Parents
are given recommendations regarding appropriate Assistive Technology
for their child and if Computer Assisted Learning sessions are needed.

What
Happens after the Assistive Technology Assessment?
Families can purchase the needed items from various dealers. We also
offer the TECHConnection Lending Library.
We can provide individual sessions on a fee for service basis. Families
are also given information about membership in the TECHConnection
which provides training workshops for parents and children and free
computers to families in need of them.
